I don't hate dogs, but then I don't love them either. But then you have laid out your story well and I read. Great work...simple and sincere....

When I lived in Himachal, a street dog used to accompany me to the small shop and back. She'd sleep outside the door at night and then disappear for the day but somehow always knew when I was going to the shop. She was also great for keeping the monkeys at bay!

Have you read the book Chaos in a Coupé? Those dogs are also quite good at keeping the monkeys at bay.

No! But I've just looked it up and will give it a read at some point soon.

If you've ever travelled by train in India you'll probably enjoy the book - I found it fascinating!

I love travel writing that becomes specific enough to be impossible to fake.

Not “India” in the abstract, but one dog leaning out of a café window while someone inside barely notices anymore because they’ve both become part of the same daily rhythm. Those tiny recurring details are usually what make a place stay with you later.
